One of the best things about Albuquerque is the beautiful Sandia Mountains and having access to multiple hiking and mountain biking trails in the foothills and the Sandia Mountain Wilderness Area. Living only a half mile from the Michael Emery Trailhead, I head out for a hike every weekend. I love all the variety of plants, cactus, the picturesque city views and the constantly changing color of the Sandia Mountains. Out on the trails, you may encounter New Mexico wildlife like rabbits, lizards, snakes, deer, and roadrunners so be on the lookout.
Just minutes from Downtown Albuquerque, many of the Open Space trails have parking lots, running water and port-a-potties. Map out your trial, distance, and level of difficulty on the Sandia Mountain Hiking Guide. Elena Gallegos Picnic Area and trailhead located at Menaul and Embudo Canyon offer picnic shelters.
